2D Animatic

Storyboards are used to plan the story at the initial stages of any 2D animation film. These help in getting the flow of the story fine-tuned, and in the pre-visualisation before production starts. Storyboards are static comic book style series of images. These images can only give a general direction of narration. To get a better idea of how the final animation scene will look, a 2D animatic is ideal.

A 2D animatic is a moving sequence of rough sketches with the sound effects and maybe even dialogues. These are used by directors of 2D animation to check how the sequence will look after it is made. Since there is some sound and motion, the 2D animatic is helpful in checking whether the sounds and the visual are compatible or not.

A 2D animatic helps with the technical aspects of a scene as well, like the camera angle, screenplay as well as the shot-list and timing issues. Since it gives a rough preview of what the sequence will look like after completion, it becomes easier to remove frames or scenes that are not needed. Since animation scenes are expensive to produce, this results in money saved on scenes that would have been edited out of the movie.

A 2D animatic can be a hand drawn series of rough sketches which are then sequenced together to create motion. There are also animatics creating software programs that can make the process much easier. With the help of storyboarding artists and 2D animatic artists, the work of the director and the animators becomes much more streamlined.
