2D Animatics

The 2D animation process begins right from the scripting stage. Most of the times, the first step of 2D animation is not scripting. Instead, it goes through a process of storyboarding, where the entire story is drafted in a comic book form. This storyboard is used for the planning of the entire film, instead of the script. An additional support to storyboarding is creating 2D animatics.

2D animatics are a rough animation of the static storyboards. These help in seeing the flow of the narration which might not be possible with just the storyboards. 2D animatics may also be used to check the compatibility of the sound track with the animation, and some rudimentary dialogues also can be included.

2D animatics help the creative planning of the 2D animation. The director can plan out the entire movie down to each single frame, with the technical details of every one of them. With the basic animation provided by the animatics, it is possible for the director to see if the creative content of the movie is cohesive and appropriate. Any unnecessary or unwanted scenes can be eliminated at the animatics stage. This is even more important in the production budget management.

Animation production costs are incurred per scene and per frame, since each one of them have to be made individually, unlike a real people movie. Any scene that is edited out after production means wastage of money. With 2D animatics, it is possible to greatly reduce the wasted effort and finances. This makes 2D animatics a very important part of animation film planning.
