Storyboards are a tool to help fine-tune the story and the narration,
while 2D animatics help in refining the animation production. 2D animatics are audio-visual animations that are not the finished product but a preview of what it would look like after it has been made. Animatics include sounds and some dialogues to check whether the soundtrack works with the sequence and the dialogues go with the scene.
2D animatics serve a dual purpose; one that is creative and the other that is financial. By making animatics before the final film, the director and the creative team can check whether the sequencing and the narration are not ‘off’. Much of the creative planning can be done on storyboards and 2D animatics without even rolling the camera. Storyboards and animatics can be used to plan every single creative and technical detail of a scene. Thus, when the director goes out to make the scene, he knows exactly how the camera is going to be and how the scene is going to look.
Because 2D animatics and storyboarding make the vision and the method of execution completely clear for the director, he does not need to experiment with camera angles. This means he saves time on production which in turn leads to money saved, which brings us to the financial benefits of 2D animatics and storyboarding. Not only does this save time for the director during production, it also saves him and the animators from wasting time on scenes that would have been edited out from the movie.
