Animation Pre-Production and How It Affects the Quality of Production

Animation is an art form that is quite expensive to produce. Even though it is cheaper than what it used to be, it is still more expensive than regular films which are, after all, simply a series of still photographs clicked very quickly. Animation, on the other hand, is created manually and needs a high investment in order to be of a high quality. This is why the animation pre-production stage of any production can be quite crucial.

Unlike regular films, animation pre-production does not begin with scripts. Once the story outline is ready, it is converted into a storyboard where the visual details are worked out. These details may include camera angles, shot transitions, character positioning, lighting, and much more. At this stage, the storyboards simply help in determining if the flow of narration is proper or if it needs to be revised. Almost all of the traditional editing of the story happens at this point.

As the planning progresses, the storyboards become more and more technical. This is crucial since most of the times, the production of the animation is outsourced, and the director may not be able to see what the animators are doing. With all the details worked out on the storyboard, the director can be assured of proper communication and, resultantly, a proper translation of his vision. This animation pre-production planning is essential since every scene that needs to be removed during editing is equal to a lot of money wasted. So, animation pre-production planning not only helps in a better product aesthetically, but also in a movie that has minimum wastage in time and money.
