Cartoon Animation

A cartoon animation is a 2D animation that is either hand-drawn or made to look hand-drawn even though made on the computer. It has a story and is meant for cinema, television, or the computer screen. A cartoon animation is an animation but not all animations are cartoons. This is why the term cartoons and animations cannot be used interchangeably.

Cartoon animation falls under the category of traditional animations. The initial animation forms date back to the prehistoric cave paintings where an attempt was made to show motion by painting animals with multiple legs (to show their positions at various different angles while running). Later, flip books were used to show motion with 2D pictures. These books had the same image on each page with a minor position change, so when the pages were flipped rapidly, it appeared as if the image was moving.

Cartoon animation usually features 2D characters, and, very often, anthropomorphised animals. One of the most famous cartoon animation film makers was Walt Disney who created the cartoon characters Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Pluto and Goofy. Other popular cartoon characters are Tom and Jerry, who featured in the cartoon animation by the same name, featuring the much loved cat that is eternally chasing the mouse.

Most of the cartoon animations featured this same chase theme, where Sylvester was chasing Tweety bird, the coyote was chasing the Road Runner (Beep Beep!), and Elmer Fudd was furiously chasing Bugs Bunny. Most people have grown up watching these cartoon animations and remember them fondly. They are still just as popular now as they were then.
