How much the 2D animator companies owe to Disney

Animation has been a much favoured past-time for children since a number of years now. Walt Disney, who is widely acknowledged by most to be the chief innovator of animation, created a number of ever-popular characters. Some of these characters are still just as beloved of the kids as they were so many decades ago. Many techniques that Disney was the first to use are now in popular use by most 2D animator companies today.

One of the most important innovations Walt Disney presented to the 2D animator companies was the Cel method of animation. As is well known, animation is produced by creating each frame either by hand or digitally. In its initial years, the frames were drawn and rendered manually. This meant that each individual frame was made completely by hand, even if there were large portions of the scenes with a static background.

Disney was the foremost company to use cels, which are acetate sheets on which each individual component of the scene is drawn. With this innovation, it became possible to make a single cel of the unchanging parts of the scene in order to save time and effort. This technology has cut down the cost and time in production for the 2D animator companies.

Another contribution by Disney that has been of immense help to not only animation companies but every creative field today is the storyboard. The storyboard was first thought of at the Disney studios to plan out scenes. Now, all 2D animator companies use storyboards to plan out the entire sequences, not to mention the technical planning of every frame.
