Animation in India is on its way to becoming serious business. However, this is all based on outsourced business that the production houses in animation get rather than an internal growth. India is perceived as a good place to get animation produced because of the extremely low cost of production compared to the American and European production houses, a comparable quality, and animators that are English speaking.
Indian production houses in animation are sought after by these foreign animation makers for all these reasons and yet India has not yet made a mark with its own animation. There have been numerous productions and series made in India, but none of them show the quality or the popularity that is enjoyed by the animation that is made for international clients.
There are a few reasons that the experts have pinpointed as the cause of this issue. The main reason is that most investors do no t take animation as a serious business. It is still held to be kids’ entertainment by many. This has led to very little money being invested in production houses in animation. Since animation is expensive and needs a lot of money to achieve a high enough quality, this results in poor quality production.
Another reason is that the production houses in animation mainly rely on mythology and folk tales for their source of stories. While this was a novel concept initially, these stories are known to everyone and are not fresh or contemporary. Indian animators need to look for a fresh source of stories and also better investors for Indian animation to reach higher levels.
